Synchronizing community with commuting
Central Glass International Design Competition 2009 / Entry
Central Plaza @ Basel SBB, Basel, Swiss
Dimension: 300’ x 300‘ / Budget: N/A

Basel that borders France and Germany has been developed as a cross-border metropolitan. Basel SBB, the central station in Basel, has been held an important place as a rail hub among three rail way stations-those of France, Germany and Switzerland. Basel with global importance of pharmaceutical and chemical industry provides highly attractive job opportunity to French and German. Besides, it is also a center for cultural and educational institutes thus making it a commuter pole with people commuting from the outer cities to the center of Basel, and from France and Germany as well. In these aspects, everyday over 46,000 residents from France and Germany commute to Basel, and the cross-border proportion of the population in the city is 39.8%, which is completely remarkable in Europe.
